I often snap random photos when I’m out and see if anything pops up when I’m back home. Sometimes, I find something, but not usually.
This was taken today at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Rockland, Massachusetts, which borders the town of Hanover, where I grew up.
Corporal James Levings of the 49th Infantry was injured in battle in August 1918. He was transported to a military hospital in Manhattan, New York, and six months later, he succumbed to his wounds just one day shy of his 25th birthday in 1919.
Today, I learned that Corporal Levings is memorialized at the James J. Levings Square located at the corner of Elm Street and Water Street in Hanover.
I grew up on Elm Street while my oldest friend, Tom, grew up in the first house on Water Street located at the corner of Elm! As kids, we would sit in that very square and watch the older kids drive by in their limos on the way to prom. Tom, and sometimes me, if I was lucky, would even mow the grass with his grandfather’s tractor.
Like I said, sometimes I find something. And today had the added bonus of bringing back a lot of good memories!
